The 3rd King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion were in India when the war began in August, 1914 but they were soon on their way home and in November reached Winchester where they became part of 80 Brigade, 27th Division. The following month the division crossed to France. On 14th February, 1915, they were in billets in Dickebusch when at 4.10pm very heavy shelling began as a result of which the 1st Leinster battalion were driven from their trenches at Voormezeele. 3rd King’s Royal Rifle Corps were immediately sent there to join in a counter-attack to retake these lost trenches. This took place during the night and the trenches were successfully recaptured but not without cost, one of the casualties being Frank Mixer who was killed. |
